John lives with his wife Judy in a converted pub in the North of England. John has worked and qualified more different breeds in British working trials than any other trainer and also participated in the first ever open agility competition in the world.

John needs no introduction to anyone currently engaged in the study of canine behavior and training as he is one of the most sought after speakers on the subject in the world today.

John has been involved in agility since it first began, and has had a huge influence on the top trainers around the world. He stresses teaching your dog to play, tug, retrieve, and how to use your dog's natural instincts to cement behaviors and your relationship.

TRACKING TRAINING WORKSHOP TOPICS:

This will be a tracking seminar designed for those getting started and/or wanting to improve their skills, and will include AKC competition trials, British working trials and police style tracking information. John may cover these topics and more, depending on the interest and experience of the participants:
  • Teach your dog to track a person
  • How to recover lost or hidden property
  • Creating starter tracks and general track laying
  • line handling
  • Learning the effects of age, wind and terrain on tracks
  • Guidelines for straight line tracks & first corners
  • Applications of free tracking, tracking on a harness/line and line handling
  • Indicating lost property
  • Taking into account age of tracks and cross tracks
  • Variable surface tracking
Handlers and dogs must be physically fit. Dogs must be over 6 months of age, fine around people they do not know and have no aggression problems please. You will need a non-restrictive TRACKING harness (not a walking harness) and 25 foot (or longer) tracking line, a bag containing five different types of food rewards, five different toys that a dog enjoys playing with and lots of personal enthusiasm.
Dogs need no formal obedience training and do not need to do a recall as they will be on a harness and line or collar at all times.

PERFORMANCE FOUNDATION TRAINING WORKSHOP TOPICS:

This seminar will teach you how to build a foundation of FAST, FUN, and CONTROLLED FOCUS in your performance dog. Eminent behaviorist and the trainer voted "most likely to teach your dog to play" will be here to show you how to power your dog! Bring toys!!!
  • Development of play as a training tool, and the importance of play in the performance dog.
  • Games to make 'em faster step by step.
  • Making yourself more exciting
  • Creating a food or toy motivated dog.
  • Teaching puppies and adult dogs to play.
  • Possession versus sharing games.
  • Controlling the games -- how to balance control and enthusiasm
  • John will focus his attention on whatever performance sport the participants would like.
John's "Special Toy" game was the inspiration for Nancy Gyes' Tug 'n Treat. He is a master of motivation and teaching you and your dog to have fun together. He also has a deep understanding of canine behavior and has a common-sense (but uncommon) approach to training. We first met John at PowerPaws camp a few years ago and were blown away by his simple but extremely powerful techniques -- all "disguised" as games. He is a fascinating, entertaining speaker!

We had John do this workshop a few years ago and it was a blast!!!
